Nathan, I'm shocked that this is your first experience of having a children's movie bring up your formative trauma. I feel like this happens to me constantly as a parent. All those movies depicting loving, enviable families. I just have to shut them out to get through them. Inside Out was especially rough for me.
The movie itself certainly does sound like an odd duck. Certainly no one was clamoring to meet Garfield's deadbeat dad. And making Jon into a saint is certainly a choice.
