Upgrade is most obviously influenced by the body horror of David Cronenberg, particularly his work in the 1980s, and Phillip K. Dick, who spent his career delving deep into the issues of identity, humanity, and technology. But it’s also inspired by junkier science fiction from the nineteen eighties when I just started falling in love with movies.
