It would be impossible to write about John Travolta’s superstar-making performance in 1977’s Saturday Night Fever outside of the context of the actor’s pouty, androgynous gorgeousness because John Badham’s masterpiece is about the cruelty of beauty and the arrogance of youth. It’s about the tragedy that we are at our most desirable and desired when we are selfish, mean, self-absorbed, and concerned exclusively with our needs.
