H.G. Wells’ belief that Joseph Conrad had borrowed excessively from Dr. Moreau in creating Colonel Kurtz tested their longtime friendship. Conrad and Wells’ iconic madmen have uncannily similar cinematic legacies. Heart of Darkness and The Island of Dr. Moreau inspired legendarily disastrous productions from filmmakers crazy with ambition and audacity, as well as behind-the-scenes documentaries. Both adaptations would cast a belligerent and out-of-control Marlon Brando as a God-like lunatic.
