I suspected that Paul Thomas Anderson's movie about L. Ron Hubbard would be great on a historical level. I was right.
I am a man of obsessions. Few things fascinate or horrify me quite like the celebrity slave cult known as Scientology. I cannot tell you how many books I’ve read about Tom Cruise’s pseudo-faith. So when I learned that Paul Thomas Anderson, one of my favorite living filmmakers, and coincidentally the director of one of Cruise’s best films, was making a movie based on Scientology, albeit by another name, starring two of my all-time favorite actors in Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, my expectations were sky high.
