Like Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash has the curious, not entirely enviable position of being widely seen as a country singer for people who do not like country music. Legends don’t come more outsized than Cash, whose rebellious persona, gloomily monochrome fashion sense and historic capacity for both self-destruction and forest destruction endeared him to punks and rockers and everyone else who feels angry and different.
