Joy of Positivity pick: Valley Girl (1983)
Nicolas Cage's starring debut is one of those magical movies that does everything right. It's way better than a movie based on a novelty song has any right to be.
It seem safe to say that Nicolas Cage was not overjoyed when he became seemingly the only young actor in Hollywood who wasn’t cast in the epic 1983 adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. The rejection must have been particularly painful since the man rejecting him was his own damn uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, a filmmaker of some note. Incidentally Coppola also did his nephew dirty by casting Andy Garcia in a juicy The Godfather Part III role his own relation desperately wanted.
